DFDS has announced the appointment of Michael Hansen as its new president and CEO, a position he will effectively assume on July 1, 2026. This executive move is in response to the company's strategy to accelerate its transition towards improving financial performance. Hansen, who currently holds the CEO position at Hempel, will succeed Torben Carlsen, whose departure is scheduled for the same date.
The change in the executive leadership is the result of a succession process initiated in November 2025, motivated by the mandate of the Board of Directors to incorporate new perspectives into the shipping and logistics group. Hansen's incorporation is seen as a signal of the company's intention to optimize operations and unlock the value of its transportation network.
Claus V. Hemmingsen, chairman of the Board of Directors, has defined the immediate priorities for the new executive, indicating that the clear short-term task is to elevate financial performance. He has also noted that the long-term goal lies in continuing to unlock the value of the network by optimizing operations and organic growth.
Hansen brings extensive experience in the maritime and logistics sector to the position. Before his time at Hempel, where he led a strategic transformation focused on cash flow and scalability, he worked for nearly two decades at A.P. Moller – Maersk. His career includes senior management positions in Europe, Latin America, and Oceania, having served as CEO of Seago Line and Global Head of Sales for Maersk Line.
In light of the current landscape, Hansen has expressed his commitment to lead DFDS into this new phase. The executive has acknowledged that while DFDS has a significant legacy, it currently faces challenges in various areas. He stated that, through collaboration and leveraging the existing network, it is possible to unlock the full potential of the company. His leadership approach focuses on staff engagement to achieve business results, while also maintaining sustainability goals.
