Tangier Med surpasses 11 million TEUs and is nearing the major European ports

The port complex of Tangier Med closed the fiscal year 2025 with a movement of 11,106,164 TEUs in its four container terminals, representing an increase of 8.4% compared to the previous year. This figure surpasses the combined total of the two main Spanish ports, Algeciras (4.7 million TEUs) and Valencia (5.6 million), which together reached 10.4 million units.

With these results, the Moroccan port approaches the figures of the two main European berths in the container sector. Rotterdam, pending the final results from the previous fiscal year, handled 13.8 million TEUs in 2024, while Antwerp closed the year with 13.6 million. Following behind is Hamburg, which operates around eight million units.

The growth of Tangier Med has been driven by the commissioning of the latest expansion of Terminal TC4, operated by APM Terminals. In total across all its activities, the port complex handled 161 million tons of cargo in 2025, which represents a year-on-year increase of 13.3%.

The Tangier Med model combines dense maritime connectivity, a high operational rate, and a logistics integration that reduces friction in operations. This approach allows it to absorb massive transshipment volumes while satisfying the needs of industrial value chains located in its hinterland. Its position as a transshipment port on the east-west axis is strategic, with ample capacity in its terminals and competitive operating costs. Moreover, the European emission trading regulations (ETS) may favor attracting traffic that avoids a stop at the European shore.

Truck activity reached 535,203 units in 2025, with a year-on-year growth of 3.6%, primarily supported by exports of industrial products (+4.8%) and agri-food products (+4.3%). Tangier Med and Algeciras form a corridor of goods that connects Africa and Europe, with thousands of trucks circulating each year. According to data from the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras, in 2025 almost half a million trucks crossed from one shore to the other, 5% more than the previous year.

Regarding passenger traffic, Tangier Med recorded 3,220,422 passengers and 895,341 vehicles in 2025, with increases of 5.7% and 5%, respectively. The Marhaba campaign was conducted under optimal conditions thanks to the complete implementation of the closed ticket system, which has allowed for regulating flows according to the actual capacity of the fleet.

Dry bulk traffic reached 522,493 tons, with a decrease of 11% due to the postponement of cereal imports. In contrast, liquid bulk totaled 8,641,481 tons, a 13% increase, driven by hydrocarbon traffic.

The two vehicle terminals handled 526,862 units in 2025, 12% less than the previous year. This traffic includes 327,569 vehicles exported from Renault plants in Melloussa and SOMACA (Casablanca), 126,874 vehicles from the Stellantis plant in Kenitra, and 39,751 vehicles in transshipment. The decline reflects production adjustments aligned with market demand and the reconfiguration of flows in global automotive markets.

The port recorded 16,686 ship calls, a 4.5% decrease compared to 2024, due to the replacement of certain RoPax ships with higher capacity units. At the same time, it received 1,319 megaships over 290 meters in length, 8.4% more than the previous year.

In this scenario, towards the end of 2026, Nador West will join, the new port that Morocco will inaugurate 50 kilometers from Melilla, designed following the Tangier Med model. The new complex will have the capacity to handle up to three million TEUs annually in its first phase, a figure that could rise to 5.5 million in subsequent phases.
