The Port Authority of Algeciras Bay (APBA), through the construction company SATO, has initiated preliminary work to activate in the coming days the temporary diversions that will affect users of the Ribera Maritime Promenade, due to the start of Phase 2 of the Maritime Lake project in Llano Amarillo.
The action encompasses the northern front of Llano Amarillo and the corridor between the UCA SEA building and the area of the children's park of the flamingo and the outdoor auditorium executed by the Algeciras City Council in 2024.
The new temporary pedestrian route to access the Ribera Maritime Promenade will run behind Mount Kunfú and the UCA SEA building, leaving the northern section of Llano Amarillo without access while the works are developed.
The president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, has stated that "we hope not to disturb users much, but it is a work that will mark a before and after in the city." The activation of the diversions has been delayed after the signing of the planning act weeks ago, coinciding with the start of the storm period.
The work has an investment of 5,576,207 euros, plus VAT, and an execution period of 18 months, representing a new boost to the Maritime Lake project.
The works will be developed from this month until 2027 over a scope of action of 16,091 square meters. Among the main actions is the rectification of the current alignment of the northern closure of Llano Amarillo to maintain the width of the Ribera Promenade constant. The new alignment will include a section of 77 meters of extension of the block vertical dock, which will be the future docking and boarding point of the APBA's visiting boat.
The rest of the northern closure will be executed by means of a new sloped breakwater and special concrete "Coastalock" pieces of 3.4 tons, designed to promote the creation of intertidal habitats in maritime fronts. In addition, a staircase area will be enabled as grandstands towards the sea, 240 meters long, and three fishing platforms.
The phase also includes the creation of more than 1,300 square meters of green areas with 163 trees and more than 1,600 shrubs; the installation of eight pergolas with benches, trash cans, and fountains, as well as a cafeteria area. The bike lane will also be extended by 181 meters to connect it with the existing section in Pérez Arriete, and 10,648 square meters of pedestrian areas will be urbanized, which will include a marine-themed children's play area, a physical maintenance area for the elderly, and a calisthenics circuit, among other improvements.
