Maersk updates the emergency contingency surcharges for routes from Oman and the Red Sea of the Middle East

The logistics and shipping company Maersk has announced changes to the levels of the emergency contingency surcharge (ECS) applied to certain maritime routes from ports in the Middle East, in response.

Maersk updates the emergency contingency surcharges for routes from Oman and the Red Sea of the Middle East

The logistics and shipping companyMaerskhas announced changes to the levels of the emergency contingency surcharge (ECS) applied to certain maritime routes from ports in the Middle East, in response to the operational context in the region. The update will affect shipments originating from ports inOman—with the exception of Sohar— and from ports of the Red Sea in the Middle East, specifically inJordanand in the Saudi ports of Jeddah and King Abdullah, inSaudi Arabia.

The new levels of the ECS surcharge will take effect with a price calculation date of March 6 for traffic that is not regulated by theFederal Maritime Commission(FMC). In the case of countries subject to this regulation —includingthe United States, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Taiwan, andColombia— a 30-day prior notification period will apply. Additionally, for shipments related toVietnama 15-day notice period is established before the new surcharges come into effect.

The update includes both import and export operations within the intraregional traffic connecting the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. According to the company, the specific changes in the ECS are detailed in the table published in its official communication and have also been incorporated into its rate announcement page.

Maersk has indicated that all surcharge modifications are subject to the relevant regulatory approvals and the notification periods required by current regulations. Once these requirements are fulfilled, the new surcharges will be reflected in the most recent invoices to customers.
