WISTA Spain claims at the I National Congress of the Spanish Port Sector gender equality as a factor of competitiveness in maritime professions

WISTA Spain was present at the I National Congress of the Spanish Port Sector, held on March 3, 4, and 5 in Valencia with the participation of more than 650 professionals and over 50 national and international experts. The event, organized by the Port Authority in collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia, addressed the main issues shaping the future of ports, including decarbonization, port electrification, digitalization, connectivity, port and infrastructure security, and the strategic role of ports in the Spanish economy.

The congress brought together representatives from the European Commission, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), public administrations such as the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, ICEX, and Redeia, as well as major energy companies like Enagás, Endesa, Iberdrola, REGENERA, and Moeve. Terminal operators such as BEST, APM Terminals Gateways, and Noatum, shipping companies like MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company and Baleària, and insurers such as TT Club also participated.

A strong representation from WISTA Spain attended the congress. Two of its members, Sara Recatalá Chorda and Mercedes Pardo, participated in the round table dedicated to 'The future of maritime professions.' During the session, issues such as the increasing efforts of the sector to promote flexibility and work-life balance without compromising port operations, as well as the advances made in gender equality and its positive impact on competitiveness and business strategy, were discussed.

During the debate, it was noted that while gender equality is gradually improving in shore positions, a significant gap persists in roles on board. In this regard, WISTA referred to the WISTA-ICS Diversity Handbook, a publication that outlines measures aimed at increasing the presence of women in navigation.

Participants also analyzed the challenges associated with digitalization, professionalization, and generational renewal in the maritime and port sectors. Both Sara Recatalá and Mercedes Pardo agreed that rather than a 'vocational crisis,' the industry faces a 'narrative challenge': the maritime sector is innovative, international, data-intensive, and increasingly oriented towards decarbonization and port electrification, but this message is not always communicated effectively.

WISTA holds that diversity constitutes a factor of attraction and retention of talent, especially among younger generations and STEM professionals, who seek diverse and inclusive leadership environments. Through initiatives such as mentoring programs, educational outreach actions, and awareness activities, WISTA continues to work to bring the maritime profession closer to new generations.
