The Port of Algeciras issued a reminder this Thursday aimed at transporters and logistics operators operating on the routes of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Unified Cargo Service by Road (SUMC) is already in force and compliance is mandatory for all trucks heading to Ceuta or Tangier Med (Morocco). Through its official account on the social network X, the Port Authority of the Bay of Algeciras (APBA) stressed that all heavy vehicles, both loaded and empty, must process their reservation with the shipping companies through this digital platform. The message includes a direct warning: without a confirmed boarding reservation, trucks will not be able to access the port area.
The SUMC was launched on December 9, 2025, by the APBA with the aim of modernizing the management of road traffic at one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean. It is not an optional tool, but a mandatory requirement for all transporters operating on the maritime connections between Algeciras, Ceuta, and Tangier Med. The platform is integrated into the digital ecosystem Teleport 2.0 and pursues a more intelligent, efficient, and predictive model of truck traffic management accessing the port facilities.
The implementation of the SUMC responds to an operational need of the port: to reduce congestion and improve the flow of heavy vehicles at its access points. By centralizing all operations related to boarding reservations and access appointments in a digital layer, the system allows anticipating the arrival of trucks and managing the entry flows to the port in a more orderly manner. In practice, the SUMC acts as a filter: if a truck is not registered on the platform with its corresponding reservation and appointment, the access barriers to the port area will not open.
The APBA points out that the SUMC is not just a control mechanism, but a tool that provides operational advantages to the entire supply chain. Among the benefits of the system is the centralization of management since the platform brings together the boarding reservation request and the appointment to access the port in one unique point. It also offers complete traceability, allowing transporters and companies to track the process in real-time from the request to boarding. Additionally, there is better coordination with shipping companies, thanks to more direct digital communication among all operators, and greater operational transparency, as processes and times are recorded within the Teleport 2.0 system.
Since its activation in December, all boarding requests must be processed exclusively through the SUMC, which automatically generates the corresponding access appointments to the port area. This change represents a turning point in the operations of the Port of Algeciras, leaving behind manual processes and opting for a digital infrastructure adapted to the demands of international trade and the intense traffic recorded on the Strait routes.
