TheInternational Maritime Organizationhas summoned an Extraordinary Council that will be held on March 18 and 19 to analyze the situation in the Middle East and its repercussions on maritime transport and the safety of seafarers. The body will be chaired byVíctor Jiménezand will gather international representatives to discuss the impact of tensions in strategic areas such as theArabian Sea, theGulf of Omanand the Gulf region, with particular attention to theStrait of Hormuz.
The recent geopolitical escalation has raised concerns about the security of maritime routes and the stability of energy trade, making it critical to coordinate international responses.
During the meeting, the 36th extraordinary session of the Council will open on Wednesday, March 18, and will close on Thursday, March 19, at a time to be confirmed. Additionally, a hybrid press conference is planned, both in-person and virtual, where information will be provided on the conclusions and possible measures arising from the meeting.
This Extraordinary Council reflects the strategic importance of the region and the need to protect navigation and trade flows in the face of current uncertainty.
