The container ship Tahat (IMO 9459125), under Algerian flag, will resume its activity after making its first call at the port of Algeciras, where the consignee Transcoma leads a comprehensive operation aimed at the complete reactivation of the vessel. According to the company, the work began on March 29 and is expected to last until April 20, the date on which the ship is scheduled to return to its next service with the shipping company CNAN MED from Valencia.
The Tahat is a fully cellular container ship built in 2012, with a Dae Sun design of 1,040 TEUs of capacity. The vessel has a total length of 146.3 meters, a beam of 22.6 meters, a depth of 11.2 meters and a deadweight of 12,780 tons. Its gross tonnage is 9,998 GT and it has two onboard cranes with a load capacity of 40 tons each, making it a ship equipped to operate in ports without their own container handling infrastructure.
The operation that Transcoma is conducting in Algeciras encompasses a management that the company has described as '360 degrees,' as it involves multiple technical, logistical, and administrative areas simultaneously. Among the tasks being executed is the provision of supplies for the crew, the management of CTM (Captain’s Table Money) and the coordination of spare parts shipments from Korea, Germany, China, and Spain, which highlights the international scope of the logistics chain associated with this type of intervention.
Likewise, the consignee has taken on the coordination of both national and international technicians who participate in various tasks onboard. Administratively, the company has also been responsible for processing consular invitation letters, a standard procedure when the presence of foreign personnel is required in port operations.
Regarding technical interventions, the work includes the supervision of repairs to pipelines, the tuning of cranes and lifeboats, as well as adjustments to the ship's radio communication and gyroscopic equipment. Measurements of thickness are also being conducted, an essential procedure to verify the structural condition of the hull and ensure that the vessel complies with the standards required by classification societies. Similarly, class inspections are being carried out, necessary for the ship to resume its commercial activity with all valid certifications.
The management of local workshops in Algeciras for the execution of part of the work is also part of the operational scope, as well as the crew changes that have been scheduled during the ship's stay in port.
Transcoma has indicated that this project is one of the most comprehensive in which it is currently working, as it requires a high capacity for logistical coordination and extensive technical knowledge from its team. The consignee usually operates in the Strait of Gibraltar area, a zone of high maritime traffic density where attention to vessels in transit and commercial calls generates a constant demand for comprehensive services like those being provided to the Tahat.
If the operation proceeds according to the planned schedule, the Algerian container ship will leave Algeciras on April 20 to join the CNAN MED line service, with a scheduled departure from Valencia. CNAN MED is the Mediterranean branch of the Algerian state shipping company CNAN (Compagnie Nationale Algérienne de Navigation), which maintains regular connections between ports in North Africa and the Western Mediterranean.
The stop of the Tahat in Algeciras highlights the role that the Bay port plays as a strategic point for the maintenance and reactivation operations of vessels, as it has a wide network of auxiliary services, specialized workshops, and international logistics connections that facilitate these types of complex interventions.
