The company Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV), belonging to the MSC Group, has successfully concluded the sea trials of the "GNV Virgo", its first LNG-powered ferry, which will be officially delivered before the end of the year. The incorporation of this new unit into the fleet will occur eleven months ahead of the initial schedule.
Built at the Guangzhou Shipyard International in Canton (China), the "GNV Virgo" is the third ro-pax unit ordered as part of a renewal plan that includes the addition of eight new ships between 2025 and 2030. This program also includes the "GNV Polaris" and "GNV Orion", which are already operational in the Mediterranean.
The construction of the "GNV Virgo" represents a significant step in GNV's energy transition strategy. The vessel is equipped with propulsion systems powered by LNG and state-of-the-art environmental technologies that allow for a reduction of over 50% in CO₂ emissions per transported unit compared to the previous generation of ships. Additionally, it meets the international standards of IMO Tier III and EEDI Phase II for energy efficiency and pollutant emissions.
In parallel, the shipping company maintains its collaboration with port authorities and sector institutions to adapt infrastructures to the growing demand for alternative fuels in maritime transport, particularly in Italian ports where GNV operates regularly.
Like the other new build units, the "GNV Virgo" is equipped with cold ironing systems, which allow for connection to the electrical grid in port with the aim of reducing local emissions and improving acoustic conditions in nearby urban areas. It also incorporates selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and heat recovery technologies on board.
From an operational standpoint, the new ferry has been designed to serve both passengers and cargo, with a maximum capacity for 1,785 passengers and 2,770 linear meters of rolling cargo. The vessel, measuring 218 meters long, 29.6 meters wide, and with a gross tonnage of 52,300 tons, can reach a maximum speed of 25 knots, allowing it to operate efficiently on medium and long-distance routes.
Regarding the onboard facilities, the design of the "GNV Virgo" prioritizes passenger comfort. It offers more than 420 cabins, rest areas with panoramic windows, designer furniture, and digital spaces. The offering is completed with children's areas, pet-friendly spaces, and a large outdoor terrace.
