The Port of Algeciras begins its 2026 trade fair calendar with its participation in Fruit Logística, the global reference event for the fresh produce sector held in Berlin from February 4 to 6. The Port Authority attends the German event alongside a large delegation of companies from the port community that will have its meeting point at the stand of the Spanish ports. In addition to the port authority, Bernardina Aduanas y Transportes, Bernardino Abad, Algetransit, Leoprolex, OperReefer, Raminatrans, Share Logistics, Transbull, Transportes Bolipesk, Tiba, and UCC Logistics Spain will be present.
The Digital Interoperability Project between the Central American Digital Trade Platform and the Port Community System of the Port of Algeciras is the main initiative that the Strait dock presents this year at Fruit Logística. This pioneering project, developed together with Costa Rica, the European Union, and the Central American Economic Integration Secretariat, aims to facilitate the bi-regional trade of fresh products between Spain and Central America.
The platform will allow the digital exchange of sanitary certificates and customs documents between both regions, streamlining the process of document assessment for goods inspection. This digitalization will reduce waiting times and increase reliability and efficiency in the process of importing goods into the European Union through the Port of Algeciras. The project is part of the EU's Global Gateway strategy, which aims to promote sustainable, digital, and reliable infrastructures in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Since 2020, Costa Rica has been the first trading partner for refrigerated traffic at the Port of Algeciras, mainly for products such as pineapple, banana, or cassava that previously arrived on the Peninsula through other European docks. Before traveling to Berlin, a business and institutional delegation from Costa Rica, led by representatives of the Exporters' Chamber and the Foreign Trade Promoter, visited the Port of Algeciras to delve into the new requirements set forth by the EU plant health regulations.
These requirements particularly affect Costa Rican cassava, both fresh and frozen, a product whose consumption is growing in Europe. The paraffin usually used to coat the tuber has been replaced for the product exported to Europe by other natural waxes that comply with the relevant EU regulations.
Regarding infrastructure investments, the Border Control Post of the Port of Algeciras continues to be subject to improvements. This year, expansion works valued at 17 million euros will begin, which will increase the area designated for plant inspection. These facilities, which were subject to the implementation of a new operating model in October 2024 by the Administration, have left behind the bottlenecks that characterized their previous operation.
The Port of Algeciras offers a wide range of solutions to position agricultural production in the market via maritime transport, both for imports and exports. The dock connects directly with 200 ports without the need for transshipment, allowing operators to benefit from competitive transit times for the trade of fresh products.
