The Port of Gothenburg registered a new annual record in 2025 by handling 934,000 TEUs, a 4% increase compared to the previous year and the highest annual volume in the port's history. The port attributed this result to a growing offer of shipping services, congestion at other European ports, and an efficient rail connection linking Gothenburg with the rest of Sweden.
Claes Sundmark, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at the Port of Gothenburg, noted that the record volumes demonstrate that the port has become a more attractive logistics hub. "We see several factors behind this growth: the port's regular line service offer has significantly expanded with two new direct services to Asia. The port's rail system, Railport Scandinavia, is a stable and unique global network that continues to grow, providing efficient access to the port for all of Sweden," the executive stated. "Moreover, other major ports in Europe have faced capacity challenges during the year, while the terminal operators at the Port of Gothenburg have been able to handle both existing and additional volumes," Sundmark added.
Container volumes at the Port of Gothenburg are growing considerably faster than at all other ports in Sweden combined.
In 2025, just over 60% of container cargo at the Port of Gothenburg was transported by rail, an increase of 5% to 529,000 TEUs compared to the previous year. The port has expressed its ongoing goal of maximizing the proportion of cargo moved by rail.
Sundmark indicated that rail growth is primarily driven by increasing volumes in rail services to and from terminals in the Stockholm region and northern Sweden, as well as in many inland areas. "The Swedish industry as a whole benefits from the wide range of services offered by the Port of Gothenburg," the official stated.
The port reported that its intra-European ro-ro traffic reached 525,000 units, a marginal increase compared to the previous year, with frequent departures to key cargo centers in northern and central Europe and the UK. The port also maintained its position as the largest vehicle port in the Nordic region, processing 251,000 vehicles during the year. Volumes had dropped by 9% after three quarters, but a strong recovery in the fourth quarter limited the annual decline to 2%.
In the energy segment, Gothenburg, Sweden's largest public energy port, handled 20.7 million tons of energy products. Volumes fell by 13% in the first half of the year, partly due to planned maintenance stops, but recovered in the fall, resulting in an annual decline of 5%. Passenger traffic remained stable, with 1.4 million travelers, an increase of 1% compared to 2024, while cruise calls increased by 13% to 63.
