The works of the Southern Access to the Port of Algeciras enter a new phase

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility continues with the execution of the works for the duplication of the N-350 road and the improvement of the Southern Access to the Bay Port of Algeciras, an action that affects the N-350, N-340, and A-7 roads in the province of Cádiz and has a budget of 50.3 million euros (VAT included), financed with European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) funds.

The works face a decisive phase in the coming weeks: the junction of the new stretch of the N-340 road at kilometer point 100. To materialize this connection, works will be carried out to duplicate the roadway, execute embankments and walls, drainage works, paving, and various complementary actions on that stretch of the road.

These operations will involve traffic impacts on the N-340 that will be developed in two phases. The first, which began today Thursday, May 21, at 8:00 AM and will last until 8:00 AM on Monday, June 1, involves the closure of the right lane in the direction of Tarifa between kilometers 100 and 100.6 of the N-340. During this phase, traffic will circulate in the adjacent lane, maintaining one lane in each direction thanks to the presence of three lanes on the roadway. The second phase, scheduled from 8:00 AM on June 1 until presumably June 30, will involve the total closure of the N-340 between kilometers 99.8 and 100.6. During that period, traffic will be temporarily diverted in both directions through a bidirectional ramp of the future Los Guijos interchange.

This intervention adds to the impacts that are already occurring on the N-350, closed between kilometers 0 and 6 since April 7 to allow for road duplication works, embankment and wall construction, drainage works, paving, and installation of sound screens. This closure, for which an alternative route was established via Paco de Lucía Street and the roundabout of Gesto por la Paz Avenue, is expected to also remain until June 30.

The project as a whole includes the duplication of the N-350 and its connection with the state road network as part of a package of actions aimed at improving road accessibility to the Port of Algeciras, a strategic node of the national and international logistics system. The works include, among other interventions already executed or underway, the demolition and reconstruction of the structure located over the Los Pastores-Saladillo roundabout, which provides continuity from the A-7 to the N-340, as well as the modification of the route of the CA-224 (Yanquis road) in its section closest to the N-340 for its connection with a new roundabout, works that are expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The duplication of the N-350 will improve the flow of heavy traffic related to goods transportation, a relevant aspect given the volume of activity at the Port of Algeciras, which ranks as the first port in Spain in total goods traffic and container movement. Improving road access to the port area constitutes a historical demand of the region, as the configuration of existing roads generates bottlenecks that affect both heavy vehicle traffic and the urban mobility of Algeciras and its surroundings.

The financing of these works under the PRTR links them to the execution deadlines established by the NextGenerationEU funds, which has conditioned the work schedule and the succession of phases that have been developed since November 2024, when the first demolitions of existing structures began.
